Chapter 34

Trent shot up in bed, instantly awake at some unfamiliar sound. There, he heard it again. There was a rustling noise on the floor beside him.

Trent sighed. “Danny?”

A shy voice replied. “Yeah?”

“What are you doing?”

“I got nightmares.”

Trent rubbed his hands over his face. He considered his options for a minute, but really he knew what he was going to do.

“Okay. Come get in bed with us. You don’t have to sleep on the floor.”

editing time…

Hello everyone,

I wanted to let you know that there’s not going to be an installment of Double Trouble this week. I know, two weeks without the kids. Unfortunately, or fortunately, my time has been consumed doing the first edit for Obsidian Sun, my new iron-age fantasy novel that will be released in late summer.

I’m loving the story again, but the first round of edits was pretty grueling. I think it expanded by a couple thousand words as I tried to expand on the description. The world building is crazy, but some of it didn’t get from my head and onto the page. But it’s wrapping up and I’m hoping you’ll all like it as much as I do. My beta readers told me they didn’t usually read SciFi, but they liked Obsidian Sun.

So bear with me. Double Trouble will resume next week, and Dreamspinner will have the first rounds of edits back, as well as the blurb.

Have a great week!

Jon

Chapter 33

“Get your ass up! The fence is down and we have fifty steers in the yard.”

Darrin opened an eye and smiled at Mitch. “Right. Sure. You don’t think I know it’s April Fools day?”

He was hit in the chest by the jean’s he’d left in the floor last night. He instinctively caught them and glared at Mitch. “Okay, it was a good joke. But nothing out, is it?”

Mitch jerked on his boots and grabbed a shirt on his way out the door. “Get up! Now.”

Darrin frowned a little. This was beyond Mitch’s normal jokes. He rolled out of bed still holding his jeans against his crotch. He made his way to the window and pulled back the curtain just in time to see several dark red cattle walk past, taking a mouthful of grass with each step.

“Well, shit!” Darrin pulled on his jeans as quickly as possible and then sprinted out the door to help Mitch. With his shirt flapping in the warm wind, he waved his hands as they tried to move the animals into the corral until they could get the fence fixed. Getting everything ready took the rest of the morning. Both of them were ready when for lunch and a few quiet minutes.
